The Roote Approach
Root yourself. Find your route. Learn how to return to yourself.
The Roote Approach is my way of thinking about meaningful, lasting change.
I believe change begins with understanding yourself — your thoughts, emotions, body, patterns, values and needs.
From there, we can explore where you want to go, what may be holding you back and what needs to change to help you move forward.
And because life won't always go to plan, there's another important part: learning how to return to yourself. Developing the self-awareness, tools and self-trust to recognise when you've been knocked off course and find your way back.
It's not about becoming a different person. It's about understanding yourself more deeply and becoming more of who you want to be.
ROOT
Understanding yourself
Meaningful change starts with understanding what is happening for you.
ROOT is about becoming curious about yourself rather than judging yourself. Together, we begin to notice and understand the different parts of your experience — and how they connect.
Your thoughts
The inner chatter, beliefs and stories you carry about yourself.
Your emotions
Learning to recognise, understand and make space for what you feel.
Your body
Becoming more aware of your physical responses and what your nervous system may be communicating.
Your patterns
Noticing the ways you respond, relate and cope — and understanding where those patterns may have come from.
Your values
Understanding what genuinely matters to you, rather than what you think should matter.
Your needs
Becoming better able to recognise what you need and allowing yourself to respond to those needs.
ROOT is about developing a deeper understanding of yourself — with curiosity and compassion rather than criticism.
ROUTE
Deciding where you want to go.
Understanding yourself is important, but for me, therapy and coaching aren't only about insight. They're also about what you do with that understanding.
ROUTE is about looking forward. Once we begin to understand what's happening, we can explore what you want to be different and what meaningful change looks like for you.
Your route won't look like anyone else's. It's about identifying what matters to you and taking realistic, purposeful steps towards it.
Your goals
Getting clearer about what you want and what you'd like to be different.
Your confidence
Developing greater trust in yourself and your ability to make decisions and cope with challenges.
Your habits
Recognising behaviours that no longer serve you and developing new ways of responding.
Your boundaries
Understanding your needs, learning when to say yes and when to say no, and becoming more comfortable taking up space.
Your choices
Recognising where you have influence and becoming more intentional about how you respond.
Your actions
Turning insight into practical, meaningful steps towards the life you want to create.
ROUTE is about moving from understanding to action — building the confidence, self-belief and skills to make changes that feel meaningful to you.
RETURN
Learning how to come back to yourself.
Meaningful change doesn't mean that life will always feel easy or that you'll never find yourself struggling again.
RETURN is about what happens when life knocks you off course.
As you understand yourself more deeply and develop greater awareness of your thoughts, emotions, body, patterns and needs, you can begin to recognise sooner when something isn't right — and know what helps you find your way back.
Rather than expecting yourself to cope perfectly, the aim is to develop greater trust in your ability to respond, recover and reconnect with yourself.
Your awareness
Recognising when you're becoming overwhelmed, disconnected or falling back into old patterns.
Your regulation
Understanding your nervous system and knowing what can help you feel more grounded and settled.
Your self-compassion
Responding to yourself with greater understanding rather than criticism when things feel difficult.
Your resources
Developing tools, strategies and sources of support you can draw on when you need them.
Your resilience
Recovering more readily from setbacks and recognising that a difficult moment doesn't undo the progress you've made.
Your self-trust
Building confidence that even when life feels difficult, you have the capacity to find your way back.
RETURN isn't about never being knocked off course. It's about knowing yourself well enough, and trusting yourself enough, to find your way back.
How The Roote Approach shapes my work
The Roote Approach isn't a rigid programme or a set of steps that everyone needs to follow in the same way. It's a framework that reflects how I think about meaningful, lasting change.
Whether we're working together through psychotherapy, EMDR or coaching, our work is shaped around you — where you are now, what you need and what you want to be different.
Sometimes the focus may be on understanding and processing what has happened. At other times, it may be about challenging old patterns, developing confidence, setting boundaries or taking action. And throughout, we're building the awareness, resources and self-trust that can help you navigate life beyond our work together.
Psychotherapy
Understand yourself and your patterns, explore what's happening beneath the surface and create new ways of responding.
EMDR
Process traumatic or overwhelming experiences that continue to influence how you feel, think or respond today.
Coaching
Focused, future-oriented support to help you clarify what you want, overcome what's getting in the way and take meaningful action.
